Custom ocular prosthetics — designed, shaped, and hand-painted for each patient
An ocularist is a highly trained specialist skilled in the fabrication, fitting, and long-term care of ocular prostheses — artificial eyes. This is one of the most precise and personal crafts in the healthcare field, combining technical expertise with an artist's eye for color, proportion, and detail.
In addition to creating the prosthesis itself, the ocularist teaches the patient how to handle and care for it, and provides ongoing care through periodic examinations and adjustments over the patient's lifetime.
"Stock" or ready-made ocular prostheses are mass-produced. Because a stock eye is not made for any specific person, it cannot fit any specific patient properly — in shape, size, coloration, or depth. The result is discomfort and a less natural appearance.
A custom ocular prosthesis is made by your ocularist specifically for you. It is shaped to the exact contours of your eye socket, painted to match the color and detail of your natural eye, and fitted and adjusted until it is as comfortable and lifelike as possible.
This is not a product. It is a craft — and it requires an ocularist with the experience and skill to do it well.
Hank Freund is a Board Certified Ocularist (BCO) — one of a relatively small number of practitioners in New Jersey — and has dedicated decades of his career to refining the art and craft of custom ocular prosthetics.
He works directly with each patient to design and fabricate a prosthesis suited to their specific anatomy and needs. The process involves careful measurements, the casting of a custom mold, and the hand-painting of the iris and fine vascular detail to match the patient's natural eye as closely as possible.
Freund Brothers is one of the most accessible locations for ocularistry services for patients near Atlantic City and throughout South Jersey.
Ocularist appointments are scheduled directly with Hank. We are able to accommodate nearly every schedule — including evenings — and are committed to making the process as straightforward and accessible as possible.
